Flight Weather Briefing (FWXB)

Whether it's a pilot, dispatcher, or air traffic controller, the safety and efficiency of flight operations is highly dependent on our ability to identify and manage threats, including weather. IATA’s 2017 Safety Report revealed that weather was involved in 40% of fatal aircraft accidents between 2013 and 2017 and as a contributing factor in 29% in all accidents during that period.

Unnecessary Weather Penetration was a factor in 30% of fatal accidents; 1 in 5 LOC-I accidents; and 44% of CFIT accidents between 2013 and 2017.

Strengthening tactical and operational decision making and weather situation awareness is critical to improving in-flight avoidance of adverse weather.

Central to combatting the role of weather in aviation occurrences and ATM delays is strengthen weather analysis and briefing techniques. In our march towards Next Generation ATM, improving weather analysis and briefing techniques must be a prime consideration as we begin to place significant investments in cockpit and tower technology and display of weather information.

Combining both Human Factors and meteorological analysis methodology, this course will help ATCOs, pilots and dispatchers develop structured self-briefing strategies to enhance their weather situational awareness and that of their crew and staff. In addition, this course is designed to expand the skills you need to become a successful briefer.  Whether its dispatchers briefing pilots or OCC staff; or an ATC shift briefing, or flight crew pre-flight briefing, this course is developed to specifically address how to prepare for and present effective briefings.

Course Objectives

This one day (1 day) workshop is designed to train personnel to present detailed flight weather briefings and provide technical meteorological information to support operations.

To maximise the transfer of training to the line, a significant portion of the course is devoted to practical operations composed of preparing and presenting weather briefings. This course will make use of real-weather events and case studies, exercises, and discussions.
