Human Factors in Aviation

Introduction

It’s a fact! Human error and Human Factors-related issues are named as contributing factors to between 70-90 per cent of aircraft accidents and incidents. Aviation is a high-hazard, high-reliability industry. That said, flight operations are complex; involving many people, support systems and interactions with multiple system levels and players. Therefore, it is critical to have an understanding of the field of Human Factors, in order to understand team dynamics, and organisational and human factors to reduce human error and its negative influence on safety, quality and efficiency.

Safe and efficient flight operations are not merely dependent on the acquisition of sound technical knowledge and skills.  They are also dependent on a sound understanding of factors that affect and limit human performance, and on crew's mastery of the cognitive and interpersonal skills which form the basis of good Crew Resource Management (CRM) / Team Resource Management (TRM) - including threat and error management (TEM).

You will leave this fast-paced training course with a comprehensive understanding of Human Factors and human error in aviation and experiences from other safety critical industries. Through discussions and analysis of case studies, accidents and research, you will leave this course with positive plans and strategies for how to better manage human error and make systems and operations more error tolerant and resilient.
